Bantam Gold Pencilled Wyandotte – Stunning & Hardy Heritage Breed
The Bantam Gold Pencilled Wyandotte is a compact, beautifully marked breed, admired for its intricate gold pencilled plumage and friendly yet independent nature. Originally developed in the United States in the 1870s, Wyandottes were named after the indigenous Wyandot people of North America. The bantam variety retains all the charm and hardiness of the standard Wyandotte but in a smaller, more manageable size.
Temperament & Care
Bantam Gold Pencilled Wyandottes are confident, inquisitive birds that enjoy foraging and free-ranging. While they are friendly, they can sometimes appear aloof, preferring to go about their business rather than seeking attention. However, with patience and trust-building, they can become hand-tame. They integrate well with most breeds but should be monitored around more delicate birds, as they can be assertive in larger numbers.
Egg Production
Wyandotte bantams are excellent layers, producing around 180-200 small cream to light brown eggs per year. They are not overly broody, making them a reliable choice for egg production while still having the ability to hatch and raise chicks when needed.
Suitability & Environment
These birds thrive in various environments, from backyard coops to open fields. They are hardy and adaptable, making them well-suited for colder climates. Unlike feather-footed breeds, Wyandottes have clean legs, making them ideal for muddy or wet conditions. They enjoy perching, roosting, and using ramps or ladders, and they particularly love chicken swings for enrichment.
